The persistent drip of the leaky faucet in the bathroom was the only sound that filled the small apartment, and each drop felt like a hammer blow against Elena's already fragile composure. She sat on the edge of the bed, watching as Marco walked towards her.

Marco had been evasive and secretive lately, disappearing for hours, always on his phone. He'd even started writing on a notepad in what Elena knew was Ukrainian. She'd found it hidden under his pillow last night.

Marco stopped in front of her, his eyes serious. "I learned a new word today, *lyuba*," he said softly, looking at her intently.

Elena's body went rigid. The word - darling - echoed in her mind. Her pulse quickened. The room seemed to spin.

She couldn't speak. She could only stare at him, her chest tight with a feeling she couldn't name.
